A Hamiltonian Approach to Nonlinear Modulation of Surface Water Waves

چکیده
Many wave phenomena in physics are described by weakly nonlinear nearly monochromatic solutions in the form of modulated wave packets. The examples include ocean waves as well as waves in optics and in plasmas. There are a number of approaches to deriving the envelope equations for these theories of amplitude modulation. In this paper, we give a unified approach, based on the principles of a Hamiltonian formulation of the equations of motion. Our principal example is the system of equations of free surface water waves, for which we give a derivation of the classical nonlinear Schrödinger and Davey–Stewartson equations, as well as the higher-order Dysthe system. One consequence of our analysis from this point of view is that the Dysthe equation can be posed as a Hamiltonian PDE.

Long Wave Expansions for Water Waves over Random Topography
In this paper, we study the motion of the free surface of a body of fluid over a variable bottom, in a long wave asymptotic regime. We assume that the bottom of the fluid region can be described by a stationary random process β(x, ω) whose variations take place on short length scales and which are decorrelated on the length scale of the long waves. This is a question of homogenization theory in...

In this paper, the nonlinear free vibration of fiber-reinforced lamina micro-switches is investigated, and a sensitivity analysis (SA) is given. The switches are modeled as solid rectangular beams consisting of an isotropic matrix with transversely and longitudinally isotropic reinforcements, incorporating a higher order Hamiltonian approach. An SA of the proposed micro-switch is presented by c...
متن کاملThe Deterministic Generation of Extreme Surface Water Waves Based on Soliton on Finite Background in Laboratory
This paper aims to describe a deterministic generation of extreme waves in a typical towing tank. Such a generation involves an input signal to be provided at the wave maker in such a way that at a certain position in the wave tank, say at a position of a tested object, a large amplitude wave emerges. For the purpose, we consider a model called a spatial-NLS describing the spatial propagation o...
متن کاملVariational principles for water waves from the viewpoint of a time-dependent moving mesh
The time-dependent motion of water waves with a parametrically-defined free surface is mapped to a fixed time-independent rectangle by an arbitrary transformation. The emphasis is on the general properties of transformations. Special cases are algebraic transformations based on transfinite interpolation, conformal mappings, and transformations generated by nonlinear elliptic PDEs. The aim is to...
متن کاملNonlinear Counterpropagating Waves, Multisymplectic Geometry, and the Instability of Standing Waves
Standing waves are a fundamental class of solutions of nonlinear wave equations with a spatial reflection symmetry, and they routinely arise in optical and oceanographic applications. At the linear level they are composed of two synchronized counterpropagating periodic traveling waves. At the nonlinear level, they can be defined abstractly by their symmetry properties. In this paper, general as...
